Children dressed up as Roald Dahl characters

World Book Day is nearly here and we've got some quick and easy last minute costume ideas which celebrate Roald Dahl and his fantastic characters!

Hundreds of children across the UK and Ireland will be dressing up as their favourite book character on Thursday 2rd March for World Book Day, and we've got some great costume ideas from Matilda to Mr Twit...

For all little geniuses, simply add a red ribbon to their hair and make sure they carry a stack of books all day (especially mischievous Matilda’s, who should always carry a paper newt)

Fantastic Mr Fox

Stick some paper fox ears on a headband and wrap with orange ribbon. Pair it with a tweed waist coat or jacket and a cheeky grin and Fantastic Mr Fox is ready to cause chaos all day!

Willy Wonka

Cover a normal hat (the bigger the better) with multi coloured tissue paper and wrap it round and round to make Mr Wonka look as bonkers as possible. Combine with a bow tie and walking cane and maybe a few golden tickets to show off.

The Peach (from James and the Giant Peach)

Cut out two big circles of cardboard and make straps out of cardboard to make a sandwich board. Paint the cardboard orange and add a leaf made out of card. Print off images of various insects and a boy and stick them on the circle as if they’re climbing up to get inside the peach.

The Grand High Witch

Draw on lots of warts but hide them under a mask of someone beautiful, only to be removed when feeling most evil! Carry around toy or paper mice to show off your previous victims and prepare an evil cackle.

Mr Twit

Cut out triangular bits of cardboard (the messier the better) and stick them together in a rough rectangular shape. Now the fun bit… cover with all things disgusting, bits of cereal and string and other things that Mr Twit never cleans away. Add elastic string to fasten the beard in place, use eyeliner or face paint to create that angry bushy brow and be grumpy and mean all day long!

Sophie (from The BFG)

To turn into a super Sophie just wear a pink (or white) nightie or dress, then simply add pigtails and round glasses.

Boy (from The Great Mouse Plot)

Why not dress up as a young Roald Dahl? You'll need a white shirt, blazer, tie, a flat cap and some smart shorts. Toy mouse optional but a mischievous look is a must!

Getting dressed up for World Book Day is a great way to raise funds for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity – providing nurses and family support for seriously ill children in the UK.
