Simon Williams at Everest Base Camp for Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity

Simon Williams conquers Everest Base Camp in aid of Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity

When Simon Williams turned forty, he decided to challenge himself like never before. As a qualified personal trainer with a fitness business, Simon is no stranger to a physical challenge, but trekking one-hundred and twenty kilometres at high altitude was a challenge of a lifetime.

Simon wanted to see not one, but two charities benefit from his inspiring trek and decided to raise money not only for Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity, but also for Dementia UK. Simon's wife's father is suffering from memory dementia and when asked what inspired Simon to raise money for seriously ill children he said, "I honestly believe that children should have the most magical and amazing childhood filled with love and laughter. It pains me to think that some children have to spend more time in hospital than anyone should ever have to."

Simon's adventure began on 17th November when he set off for Kathmandu in Nepal. After soaking up the local culture, Simon began his ascent. At minus three degrees and fifteen thousand feet, the challenging climate wasn't going to stop Simon enjoying the beautiful scenery and remembering the two causes which inspired him to tackle the Himalayas. A little while later, made it to the summit with a smile on his face and great sense of achievement.

Returning home in early December and proving that there is no limit to his fundraising efforts, Simon decided that he would keep his dedicated challenge website My Everest live until February 2017, so he can continue to share his story and receive donations from those that would like to support his efforts. Simon has also recorded several videos documenting his journey so take a look at his Facebook page to find out more.

We want to congratulate Simon for his amazing achievement in reaching Everest Base Camp and for raising over £2,000 so far (to be split equally between both charities). If you're feeling inspired by this fantastic fundraiser, why not take part in a challenge event of your own and be part of Team Marvellous.
