The Power of Play Blog

A Roald Dahl Play Specialist works to support seriously ill children and their families through the power of play. With support from Little Sharers, Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity is working to fund additional Play Specialist posts to help more children who could benefit from their care.

Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity funds a Roald Dahl Play Specialist who works at University College London Hospital, to support seriously ill children and their families.

A Roald Dahl Play Specialist will support seriously ill children in many ways, including, organising play activities for children in hospital, using play to reduce anxiety and manage feelings and to prepare children for hospital procedures. They also work to build strong relationships with families to help develop a solid understanding of the needs of the children, and family members.

Play Specialists provide invaluable care to children and their families and can help devise and implement coping strategies to reduce the amount of time other specialists, such as anaesthetists needs to provide. This in turn can save the NHS money.

Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity aims to fund at least 5 new healthcare posts every year, (there are currently 58 Roald Dahl Nurses which includes 1 Play Specialist, 2 Neuro-Rehab Occupational Therapists and 55 Specialist Nurses). The charity is working hard to fund more Play Specialist posts in the future and with help from marvellous supporter such as Little Sharers, the children's party planning company with a charitable twist.

Little Sharers is an online children's party planning service which turn's a child's birthday into a marvellous gift-giving occasion that means that charities such as Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity can benefit from generous donations, which also enable children to understand the value of sharing. A secure online gift page is created and contributions are then made. Half of the contributions go to the child whose birthday it is, and the other half goes to the charity of their choice.

Birthday parties are a time for celebration, play and fun. From waking up on the special day, partying the day away with friends to eating the yummy birthday cake, there's no end to the fun a child can have. By sharing their marvellous birthday gift fund, children can share their joy with seriously ill children who could benefit from the specialist care of a Roald Dahl Nurse or Play Specialist.

Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity is delighted to be supported by Little Sharers who have raised over £1,600 for the charity so far. Find out more about Little Sharers and learn how you can help to fund more Roald Dahl healthcare professionals like Play Specialists today.
